When Joseph Brewster Roe was born on 8 September 1764, in Selden, Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York, United States, his father, Capt. Daniel Roe, was 24 and his mother, Deborah Brewster, was 23. He married Polly Hammond on 9 March 1788, in Suffolk, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 1 September 1831, in his hometown, at the age of 66, and was buried in Selden, Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York, United States.

English: nickname from Middle English ro(o) ‘roe deer’ (Old English rā). This is the midland and southern form, also found in South Yorkshire and Lancashire. In much of northern England, however, rā remained unrounded and survives as Ray 3.
