He married Martha Cole on 8 August 1770, in Westmoreland, Cheshire, New Hampshire, United States. They were the parents of at least 11 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 9 February 1829, in Haverhill, Grafton, New Hampshire, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in Horse Meadow Cemetery, North Haverhill, Haverhill, Grafton, New Hampshire, United States.

History: John Whitman settled in Weymouth, MA, c. 1638. The poet Walt Whitman (1819–92) was descended from Joseph Whitman, who had settled in Stratford, CT, from England around 1660.
