    Serving the newly created United States of America as the first constitution, the Articles of Confederation were an agreement among the 13 original states preserving the independence and sovereignty of the states.     English (Yorkshire and Lancashire): perhaps from an Old French personal name Daguet, a pet form of ancient Germanic Dago. Alternatively, from Old French daguet, a diminutive of dague ‘dagger’, for one who wore or threatened to use a dagger. Compare Dagg and Dagger .

    History: John Daggett came from England to Watertown, MA, in 1630, and moved to Rehoboth, MA, in 1646. He was one of the original proprietors of Martha's Vineyard in 1642 and by 1651 had settled there permanently.
