When Lewis Orrin Clough was born on 11 August 1820, in Gilmanton, Belknap, New Hampshire, United States, his father, Nehemiah Clough, was 28 and his mother, Sarah Rowe, was 24. He married Mary E Burt on 7 July 1848. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. He lived in Chester, Windsor, Vermont, United States in 1860. He died in July 1884, in Alstead, Cheshire, New Hampshire, United States, at the age of 63.

1821 · Financial Relief for Public Land

A United States law to provide financial relief for the purchasers of Public Lands. It permitted the earlier buyers, that couldn't pay completely for the land, to return the land back to the government. This granted them a credit towards the debt they had on land. Congress, also, extended credit to buyer for eight more years. Still while being in economic panic and the shortage of currency made by citizens, the government hoped that with the time extension, the economy would improve.

1833 · First Public Library Founded in Petersborough

In 1833, the oldest tax-supported public library in the world was established by Reverend Abiel Abbot.

U.S. acquires vast tracts of Mexican territory in wake of Mexican War including California and New Mexico.
