When Gulbrand Thoresen was born on 14 June 1793, in Vestfossen, Haug, Eiker, Buskerud, Norway, his father, Thor Gulbrandsen, was 28 and his mother, Anne Tostensdatter, was 24. He married Ingeborg Maria Hansdatter Osterud on 16 March 1820. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 8 daughters. He died on 29 April 1874, in Eiker, Buskerud, Norway, at the age of 80, and was buried in Eiker, Buskerud, Norway.

Royal order issued by the King of Norway and Denmark in 1810 required everyone to have a certificate of smallpox vaccination. This was also recorded in the Church records. 33
