He married Lovinia Church on 21 March 1831, in Elizabethtown-Kitley Township, Leeds and Grenville, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 2 January 1868, in Lansdowne, Leeds and the Thousand Islands, Leeds and Grenville, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 73, and was buried in Lansdowne, Leeds and the Thousand Islands, Leeds and Grenville, Ontario, Canada.

History: A family called Read were established in America in the early 18th century by John Read, who was born in Dublin, sixth in descent from Sir Thomas Read of Berkshire, England. His son, George Read (1733–98), was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and as a lawyer helped frame the Constitution.
