When Altje Van Mater was born in 1737, in New Jersey, United States, her father, Cyrenius Van Mater, was 30 and her mother, Abagail Lefferts, was 29. She married Albert Polhemus on 23 March 1762. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. She died on 26 October 1804, at the age of 67, and was buried in Colts Neck, Atlantic Township, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States.

"During the six-year Revolutionary war, more of the fights took place in New Jersey than any other colony. Over 296 engagements between opposing forces were recorded. One of the largest conflicts of the entire war took place between Morristown and Middlebrook, referred to as the ""Ten Crucial Days"" and remembered by the famous phrase ""the times that try men's souls"". The revolution won some of their most desperately needed victories during this time."
