When Hans Jacob Spiess was christened on 13 December 1744, in Laufen-Uhwiesen, Zürich, Switzerland, his father, Christofel Spiess, was 36 and his mother, Anna Barbara Mueller, was 32. He married Lisabeth Keller on 9 April 1777. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 1 daughter. He died on 30 September 1817, in his hometown, at the age of 72.
