When Mele Fusi Lautama was born in 1878, in Vaotu`u, Tongatapu, Tonga, her father, Taniela Eke, was 32 and her mother, Litia 'Akauola, was 27. She married Mu'a in 1884, in Tongatapu, Tonga. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. She died about 1915, at the age of 38, and was buried in Kolovai, Tongatapu, Tonga.

Probably a contracted form of Meriel , but also associated with the small class of girls' names derived from birds, since it is identical in form with Old French merle ‘blackbird’ (Latin merula). The name came to public notice in the 1930s with the actress Merle Oberon ( 1911–79 , born Estelle Merle O'Brien Thompson ).
