When Sarah Sally Ridgway was born on 3 December 1776, in Halifax, Virginia, United States, her father, James Benton Ridgeway, was 36 and her mother, Elizabeth Chisenhall, was 29. She married John Shotwell IV on 3 December 1795. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. She died in 1824, at the age of 48.

On April 18, 1780 Richmond became the capital of Virginia. It was the temporary capital from 1780-1788.
