He married Barbara Schwarz on 4 April 1794, in Lauperswil, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 6 April 1853, in Rüderswil, Bern, Switzerland, at the age of 82, and was buried in Rüderswil, Bern, Switzerland.
