When John Kirtland was born on 5 July 1708, in Old Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut, United States, his father, Captain John Kirtland Jr., was 26 and his mother, Temperance Buckingham, was 24. He married Lydia Gilbert about 1728, in Old Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 4 daughters. He registered for military service in 1780. He died on 5 February 1787, in his hometown, at the age of 78.

The capture of Fort Griswold was the final act of treason that Benedict Arnold committed. This would be a British victory. On the American side 85 were killed, 35 wounded and paroled, 28 taken prisoner, 13 escaped, and 1 twelve year old was captured and released.
