1888 · Bauxite Mining Began

Bauxite a rock with relatively high aluminum content, is the main source of aluminum for the world. When it was discovered in Arkansas it changed the state. The city of Bauxite, Arkansas was the site of the discovery.

1894 · Texas Files Lawsuit Against Standard Oil Company

Under the direction of Governor Jim Hogg, Texas filed a lawsuit against John D. Rockefeller for violating state monopoly laws. Hogg argued that Standard Oil Company and Water-Piece Oil Company of Missouri were engaged in illegal practices like price fixing, rebates, and consolidation. Rockefeller was indicted, but never tried in a court of law; other employees of his company were convicted as guilty.

1914 · Steamboat Service Established with New York

Satilla was the first Deepwater Steamship to arrive at the port of Houston. This accomplishment successfully established a steamboat service between Houston and New York City.

English (Northamptonshire): from Anglo-Norman French fi(t)z ‘son’ (see Fitz ) + the personal name Hugh (see Hugh ), ‘son of Hugh’.

History: William Fitzhugh (1651–1701), from Bedford, England, emigrated to VA c. 1670 and established himself on the Potomac River in what was then Stafford County, VA, as a planter and exporter. He also practiced law, was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and served in 1687 as lieutenant colonel of the county militia.
