James Heaton I was born on 25 March 1690, in Wrentham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America as the son of Nathaniell Heeten and Mary. He married Eleanor Hawes on 21 July 1713, in Dedham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. He died about 1755, in New Hampshire, British Colonial America, at the age of 66.

This surname was taken to Ireland in the mid 17th century, and within Ireland is now mainly found in Ulster.
