When Pedro de Jesus Alpizar Zumbado was born on 20 April 1830, in San José, Costa Rica, his father, Félix Alpízar Alcázar, was 33 and his mother, Maria Josefa Zumbado Tenorio, was 29. He married Manuela Josefa Zamora Castro on 12 November 1849, in Atenas, Alajuela, Costa Rica. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in San José, San José, Costa Rica in 1830. He died on 9 June 1906, in Atenas, Alajuela, Costa Rica, at the age of 76.

1849

Costa Rica ousts William Walker. He wants to extend slavery to Central American countries in an expression of Manifest Destiny. He invades and names himself president of Nicaragua. Costa Rica, with the help of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, defeated Walker and his supporters with 9,000 soldiers.

1859

President Juan Rafael Mora is ousted from power. After a failed attempt at a counter-coup, he is executed.

1874

American businessman Minor Cooper Keith brings the United Fruit Company and banana cultivation to Cost Rica. Keith originally arrived to oversee construction of the Atlantic Railroad, which would connect the coffee producing central plateau with the Caribbean coast.
