Name Meaning

English (Kent): occupational name for an extractor or seller of oil, from Old French olier, huilier (from Latin oleum ‘(olive) oil’) ‘maker or seller of oil’ (i.e. vegetable oil, for lighting or cooking). In northern England linseed oil obtained from locally grown flax was more common than olive oil.

English: possibly a variant of Ollier, itself a variant of Hollier or derived from the Old French personal name Oillard (ancient Germanic Odilard, Oilard, from othil- ‘land, possession’ + hard- ‘hard, brave’).

Americanized form of German Euler . Compare Oiler .
