Tennessee was known as the Volunteer State because during the Mexican War the government asked Tennessee for 3,000 volunteer soldiers and 30,000 joined.

1862 · Battle of Shiloh

The battle of Shiloh took place on April 6, 1862 and April 7, 1862. Confederate soldiers camp through the woods next to where the Union soldiers were camped at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. With 23,000 casualties this was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War up to this point.
