When Matts Mattsson was born on 25 October 1733, in Färnäs, Mora, Kopparberg, Sweden, his father, Matts Mattsson, was 36 and his mother, Kerstin Mattsdotter, was 30. He married Cherstin Ersdotter on 6 February 1757, in Mora, Kopparberg, Sweden. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 5 August 1800, in his hometown, at the age of 66, and was buried in Mora, Kopparberg, Sweden.
