When Thomas McAuliffe was born in 1831, in Kilkenny, County Donegal, Ireland, his father, Michael McAuliffe, was 26 and his mother, Julia Cantey, was 22. He married Mary O'Keefe in 1858, in Ireland. They were the parents of at least 9 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 21 July 1921, in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, at the age of 90, and was buried in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.
