When Icabod Murray was born on 16 August 1755, in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America, his father, Jehiel Murray, was 47 and his mother, Mary Way, was 40. He married Lois Doty in 1782, in Amenia, Dutchess, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 9 sons and 3 daughters. He registered for military service in 1776. He died on 16 July 1831, in Harrisburg, Lewis, New York, United States, at the age of 75, and was buried in Lowville, Lewis, New York, United States.

Name Meaning

Scottish: habitational name from Moray in northeastern Scotland, which derives from Celtic mori- ‘sea’ + treb- ‘settlement’. The founder of the Scottish house of Murray was a Fleming named Freskin who was granted Strathbrock in West Lothian and Duffus in Moray by David I. The family took its name from the region in the late 12th century.
