When Johannes Schläpfer was born on 29 June 1766, in Schwellbrunn, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, his father, Hans Ulrich Schläpfer, was 26 and his mother, Cathrina Rotach, was 28. He married Barbara Zülli on 23 September 1791, in Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 18 May 1817, at the age of 50, and was buried in Switzerland.
