In 1731, Willington, Delaware was founded. It was named after Thomas Willing the first land developer in the area. It was later renamed Wilmington.
English (Lancashire): habitational name from a lost or as yet unidentified place, perhaps near Markham in Somerset, and apparently named from the Old English personal name Hrōda (a short form of various compound names with the first element hrōth ‘renown’) + ēg ‘island, raised area in marsh’.
