    1787 · First Fleet and Founding of New South Wales

    Per the instructions of King George III and Lord Sydney, Arthur Phillips organized an expedition to establish the first British Colony in Australia. "The First Fleet" set off on May 13, 1787, and arrived at the Botany Bay on January 18, 1788. The resulting New South Wales colony included a large stretch of eastern Australia and most of New Zealand.

    1791 · Vancouver Expedition

    From 1791 to 1795, Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy commanded a global expedition focused on exploration and diplomatic relations. In November of 1791, the crew landed at Dusky Sound, New Zealand, where they stocked up on supplies. The visit further cemented Britain's domination of New Zealand and Australia. The rest of the trip was full of unexpected problems and conflicts, resulting in only 6 out of 153 men returning home safely.
