When Johannes Schmutz was born on 12 September 1829, in Vechigen, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Johannes Schmutz, was 24 and his mother, Anna Barbara Burkhard, was 22. He married Anna Knuchel on 7 August 1857, in Vechigen, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 12 May 1881, at the age of 51.
