1944 · The G.I Bill

The G.I. Bill was a law that provided a range of benefits for returning World War II veterans that were on active duty during the war and weren't dishonorably discharged. The goal was to provide rewards for all World War II veterans. The act avoided life insurance policy payouts because of political distress caused after the end of World War I. But the Benefits that were included were: Dedicated payments of tuition and living expenses to attend high school, college or vocational/technical school, low-cost mortgages, low-interest loans to start a business, as well as one year of unemployment compensation. Name Meaning

English (Lancashire and Cheshire):

variant of Rylands; see Ryland . Middle English ryelandes, -londes refers to the strips of arable land where rye was grown within one of the large open fields that were typical of medieval communal farming; as a phrase it could be used to name an open field where rye predominated.

habitational name from Rylance, a lost place in Pownall Fee (Cheshire). The placename has the same meaning, ‘rye land(s)’, as in 1 above, with vacillation between singular and plural forms. Surnames from it are difficult to distinguish from Rylands or a Rylance from other sources.
