When Joseph LeVan was born in 1704, in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, his father, Daniel Hugo LeVant, was 32 and his mother, Anne Marie Le Beau, was 28. He died in 1729, in At Sea, at the age of 25, and was buried in At Sea.

Louis Elzevirs, along with his descendants, helped create a popular and thriving book dynasty during the Dutch Golden Age. The House of Elzevir took advantage of the tolerant climate and high literacy rates to publish a wide variety of books. Many classical Latin texts were reproduced in affordable, pocket-sized forms that found wide audiences. Unfortunately, the Elzevir Dynasty died out in 1712 as they were overtaken by international competition.
The Peace of Utrecht was a series of treaties signed between various nations that helped end the War of Spanish Succession. The conflict had involved the Dutch Republic, Portugal, Savoy, France, Great Britain, and Spain. The primary compromise contained in the treaties revolved around not allowing France and Spain to merge, which would help maintain the balance of power in Europe.
The houses along the Herengracht canal were considered a prime section of Amsterdam's real estate, and remain so to this day. However, as a result of various wars during the late 1600's and early 1700's, the pricing index for these properties dropped significantly. The index dipped as low as 151.8 in 1678. Fortunately, during the period of 1720-1736, the housing market experienced a period of recovery, and the Herengracht properties peaked at an index of 345.9 in 1736.
