Peter Graybeal

Brief Life History of Peter

I think Peter is probably the second oldest son of Peter Graybeal and his wife Christina Wampler. Peter appears to have spelled his name mostly "Graybeal," although I have seen different spellings as well. I believe he was largely known as "Jr." until his father moved to Ohio. In the 1850 census, he gives an age consistent with an estimated birth year of about 1785 in Virginia. In the 1860 census, he gives an age consistent with an estimated birth year of about 1784 in North Carolina. I believe he was probably born in Virginia before the family moved to North Carolina. The manuscript, Graybill/Stoker/Eller/Smith/Koons/Pitt Connections, by Norman E. "Gene" Pitt, gives the specific birthdate for Peter of 1 December 1783. This is the birthdate on his headstone. As his father appears in the 1785 enumeration of Botetourt County, Virginia, I think Peter was probably born there before the family moved to North Carolina. I think Peter is the male 16 to 25 in his father's 1800 census record: There is a " Peter Grabeal" in the 1800 census: Home in 1800 (City, County, State) Ashe, North Carolina Males - Under 10 2 Males -10 thru 15 1 Males - 16 thru 25 1 Males - 45 and over 1 Females - Under 10 3 Females - 10 thru 15 1 Females - 45 and over 1 I think this is Peter in the 1810 census, with a wife, son, and daughter: Name P Graybill Residence Date 6 Aug 1810 Residence Place Ashe, North Carolina, USA Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15 1 Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44 1 Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15 1 Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over 1 I think this is Peter in the 1820 census with "presumably" four sons and three daughters: Name Peter Grayline [Peter Graybeal] Enumeration Date 7 Aug 1820 Home in 1820 (City, County, State) Ashe, North Carolina, USA Free White Persons - Males - Under 10 3 Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15 1 Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 10 2 Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25 1 Peter in the 1830 census: [Peter Graybeal] Home in 1830 (City, County, State) Ashe, North Carolina Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14 2 Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29 1 Free White Persons - Males - 40 thru 49 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 5 1 Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29 1 Free White Persons - Females - 40 thru 49 1 Note he is also listed with two slaves. I haven't been able to find Peter in the 1840 census. I found plenty of his family in Ashe County, but not him. Peter is listed in the above-referenced manuscript, "Graybill/Stoker/Eller/Smith/Koons/Pitt Connections," as the father of: Catherine John Susanna David Jacob Mary There are many land deeds listed in Ashe County for Peter Graybeal, some of which belong to his father, and some which belong to this son. Caused by war veteran Daniel Shays, Shays' Rebellion was to protest economic and civil rights injustices that he and other farmers were seeing after the Revolutionary War.
