Katharina Steinmetz was born on 29 October 1750, in Wincheringen, Trier-Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany as the daughter of Margaretha Prost, Brost. She married Nicolaus Fochs on 6 March 1788, in Wincheringen, Saarburg, Rhineland, Prussia. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. She died on 25 April 1800, in her hometown, at the age of 49.
