When Lively McGhee was born in 1768, in Albemarle, Virginia, British Colonial America, his father, William McGehee, was 38 and his mother, Elizabeth Lively, was 41. He married Winifred Stodghill on 30 August 1797, in Greenbrier, Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Monroe, Virginia, United States in 1810 and Lick Township, Jackson, Ohio, United States in 1840. He died on 1 May 1843, in Jackson, Ohio, United States, at the age of 75.
