When Margaret Catherine Empey was born on 7 September 1814, in Williamsburgh Township, Stormont Dundas and Glengarry, Ontario, Canada, her father, Richard John Empey, was 27 and her mother, Elizabeth Boice, was 22. She married William Beckstead about 1830, in Canada. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. She died on 30 March 1886, at the age of 71, and was buried in Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada.

1883 · Mining Boom
In 1883, there was a mining boom in Northern Ontario when mineral deposits were found near Sudbury. Thomas Flanagan was the blacksmith for the Canadian Pacific Railway that noticed the deposits in the river.
