History: This surname is listed in the register of Huguenot ancestors recognized by the Huguenot Society of America and also in the similar register of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. The former lists Samuel Guyton as the Huguenot ancestor of the Guytons, while the latter lists Jean Guiton or Guyton. Samuel Guyton died in 1696 in Norwich, England, and it was his grandson John, born 1696, who left England and came to MD before 1740. However, Samuel and John's surname is entirely consistent with an English, rather than a French Huguenot, origin.
