From the Slavic (male) name Dragomir, from dorog ‘dear’ + meri ‘great’ (later taken as the medieval and modern word mir ‘peace’), reinterpreted as Old Danish dag ‘day’ + mār ‘maid’. This was the name of a Czech princess ( d. 1212 ), who became queen of Denmark under the official name Margarethe.
