Name Meaning

Americanized form, apparently altered via the intermediate form Pirkle , of German Birkle or Birkel or Berkel . The surname Pirtle is also common among African Americans. Compare Purtle and Pyrtle .

History: The majority of the Pirtles, Purtles, and Pyrtles (and also at least some of the Pirkles) trace their origin to Hans Jacob Berkel or Birckel or Birkle from Germany and to his namesake son who settled in PA in the beginning of the 18th century. The exact original form of their surname is not known, but various sources agree that it was spelled with k, not t.
