1 German: from Middle High German kellaere ‘cellarman’, ‘cellar master’ (Latin cellarius, denoting the keeper of the cella ‘store chamber’, ‘pantry’). Kellers were important as trusted stewards in a great household, and in some cases were promoted to ministerial rank.
