When Jens Bertelsen was born on 4 January 1811, in Vium, Silkeborg, Denmark, his father, Bertel Pedersen, was 37 and his mother, Ellen Sorensdr, was 38. He married Dorthea Birgithe Madsen on 16 June 1838, in Vium, Silkeborg, Denmark. They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in Vium, Lysgård, Viborg, Denmark for about 5 years and Lysgård, Lysgård, Silkeborg, Denmark in 1860. He died on 10 April 1908, at the age of 97.
