When Alexander Montgomery was born on 18 November 1782, in County Louth, Ireland, his father, Reverend Robert Montgomery Rector of Monaghan, was 29 and his mother, Sophia Mabella Tipping, was 36. He married Margaret Johnston on 21 March 1809, in Monaghan, County Monaghan, Ireland. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 2 January 1856, in his hometown, at the age of 73.

In Ireland this surname was present in the medieval period, died out, and was then reintroduced from Scotland in the 17th century. It has been Gaelicized in Ireland as Mac Iomaire and in Scotland as Mac Gumaraid.
