When Ellen Kahaule Carter was born on 25 January 1870, in Kau, Hawai'i, Kingdom of Hawaii, her father, Alfred Wellington Carter, was 28 and her mother, Hannah Keawemauhili Purdy, was 37. She married Hugh Kaleihalaopuna Montgomery about 1887, in Honolua, Maui, Hawaii, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. She died on 8 November 1931, in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, United States, at the age of 61, and was buried in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, United States.

1872 · The First National Park
Yellowstone National Park was given the title of the first national park by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. It is also believed to be the first national park in the world.

Commerce in Ka'u was sugar lead by Hawaiian Agriculture Co & Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co. Hawaiian Agriculture Co. est.1876 did not produce sugar cane until 1880. Known as Pahala Plantation, legally corporation was filed as the Hawaiian Agricultural Co. Employed locals including immigrants. Corporate housing projects built added to community of Pahala. The Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co est.1868. Plantation renamed Naalehu Sugar Plantation. After Hutchinson's death in 1873 renamed Hutchinson Sugar Plantation. Company purchased Hilea Sugar Plantation 1890. 1910-purchased by C. Brewer & Co. Company employed locals including immigrants. Corporate housing projects added to community of Na'alehu. 1972-Hawaiian Agricultural Co. merged with Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co. renamed Kau Sugar Co, now only sugar plantation in Ka'u. Sugar cane era came to end as Ka'u Sugar Co closed in 1996. Interest in growing coffee surged. Many of Ka'u Sugar Co staff given option to acquire land lease in 5 acre increments.
