Known as Pahala Plantation, legally corporation was filed as the Hawaiian Agricultural Co. Employed locals including immigrants. Corporate housing projects built added to community of Pahala. The Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co est.1868. Plantation renamed Naalehu Sugar Plantation. After Hutchinson's death in 1873 renamed Hutchinson Sugar Plantation. Company purchased Hilea Sugar Plantation 1890. 1910-purchased by C. Brewer & Co. Company employed locals including immigrants. Corporate housing projects added to community of Na'alehu. 1972-Hawaiian Agricultural Co. merged with Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co. renamed Kau Sugar Co, now only sugar plantation in Ka'u. Sugar cane era came to end as Ka'u Sugar Co closed in 1996. Interest in growing coffee surged. Many of Ka'u Sugar Co staff given option to acquire land lease in 5 acre increments.
