Joseph Erhart Heugel was born on 7 April 1846, in Prussia, Germany as the son of Erhardt von Heugel and Francis Pole. He married Lilly Repetto Smith on 14 October 1889, in Fayette, West Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Sheridan District, Lincoln, West Virginia, United States in 1900. He died on 11 November 1919, in Henlawson, Logan, Virginia, United States, at the age of 73.
