He married Elmeda Messer on 13 January 1834, in New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 29 December 1889, in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Newport, Jones, Iowa, United States.
