William A. Gilliam was born on 6 November 1829, in McDowell, North Carolina, United States. He married Laura Ann Capps on 3 December 1862. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Clackamas, Oregon, United States in 1870 and South Heppner Election Precinct, Umatilla, Oregon, United States in 1880. He died on 14 December 1904, in Wolf Creek, Lane, Oregon, United States, at the age of 75, and was buried in Walla Walla, Washington, United States.

Being a second spiritual and religious awakening, like the First Great Awakening, many Churches began to spring up from other denominations. Many people began to rapidly join the Baptist and Methodist congregations. Many converts to these religions believed that the Awakening was the precursor of a new millennial age.
In the 1830's, President Jackson called for all the Native Americans to be forced off their own land. As the Cherokee were forced out of North Carolina many of them hid in the mountains of North Carolina.
The first state fair in North Carolina was held in Raleigh and was put on by the North Carolina State Agricultural Society in 1853. The fair has been continuous except for during the American Civil War and Reconstruction and WWII.
