When Perumilita Williams was born on 19 October 1881, in Foster Township, Marion, Illinois, United States, her father, Christopher Columbus Williams, was 24 and her mother, Mary Ann Taylor, was 16. She married Charles McWhirter on 26 June 1898, in Marion, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 10 sons and 5 daughters. She died on 10 August 1974, at the age of 92, and was buried in Martin Cemetery, Alma, Marion, Illinois, United States.

1882 · The Chinese Exclusion Act

A federal law prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers. The Act was the first law to prevent all members of a national group from immigrating to the United States.

1885 · The First Skyscraper

The Home Insurance Building is considered to be the first skyscraper in the world. It was supported both inside and outside by steel and metal that were deemed fireproof and also it was reinforced with concrete. It originally had ten stories but in 1891 two more were added.

1906 · Saving Food Labels

The first of many consumer protection laws which ban foreign and interstate traffic in mislabeled food and drugs. It requires that ingredients be placed on the label.
