When James Raper was born on 1 February 1856, in Cross Roads Township, Wilson, North Carolina, United States, his father, Roberson Raper, was 18 and his mother, Martha Hinnant, was 24. He married Victoria Ann Flake on 4 September 1881, in Effingham, Georgia, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 10 January 1912, in Savannah, Chatham, Georgia, United States, at the age of 55, and was buried in Register, Bulloch, Georgia, United States.

Name Meaning

English (Yorkshire and Durham): northern variant of Roper . In southern dialects of English, Old English -ā- became Middle English -ō-, whereas in Yorkshire -a- was preserved and gave rise to this form of the surname.

Possibly also an altered form of German Röper or Röber (see Roeber ).
