He married Joanna Theresia Rijs on 9 February 1855, in Oedelem, West Flanders, Belgium. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 4 September 1907, in his hometown, at the age of 84.

Dutch troops are driven from Brussels, and on October 4th a unique coalition of Catholics and Liberals proclaim Belgian independence. The great powers--Austria, France, Great Britain, Prussia, and Russia--accept Belgian independence from the Netherlands.
