When Peter Barkman was born on 27 December 1828, his father, Peter Barkman, was 43 and his mother, Rebecca Shier, was 41. He married Lucinda Legear on 1 February 1855, in Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 20 June 1905, in Adare, County Limerick, Ireland, at the age of 76.
