Thomas Harding Tripp was born on 24 September 1802, in Luzerne, Pennsylvania, United States as the son of William Tripp and Grace Harding. He married Martha Fish on 25 November 1821. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He died in 1842, at the age of 40, and was buried in South Gibson Cemetery, Gibson Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, United States.

German: metonymic occupational name for a maker of wooden pattens (trippe), a type of raised sole that could be strapped to normal footwear for walking in unpaved muddy streets.
