Ex-Owner of Hotel, Cafe Passes Away Mrs. Martha Messerly Howard, age 73, who with her husband the late John Howard, owned and operated the Howard Hotel and Cafe in Brigham City for many years, passed away Wednesday evening in a Brigham City nursing home after an extended illness. Mrs. Howard was born at Wattenvil, county of Bern, Switzerland on July 21, 1891, a daughter of Johannes and Anna Elizabeth Luthi Messerly. She came to the United States when she was eight years of age with her family as converts to the LDS church. They settled at Montpelier, Idaho, where she was reared and educated. She had worked as a seamstress and waitress in Montpelier. She was married to John Howard on Jan. 9, 1911 in Paris, Idaho. They made their home in Salt Lake City and then in Garland where they operated the Garland Hotel before coming to Brigham City in 1927 to open and operate the Howard Hotel and Cafe. Mr. Howard died Dec. 17, 1960. SURVIVING ARE A SON and a dighater, Guy A. Howard, Brigham City; Mrs. Edford (Bernice) Jones, Helena, Mont.; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Harold B. Felt Funeral Home where friends may call prior to services. Burial will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
