When Pulega Filemu Leilua was born in 1942, in Lano, Samoa, his father, Filemu Leilua, was 32 and his mother, Paepae Falaga'i, was 27. He married Vise Pe'epe'e in 1962, in Lano, Samoa. He died in 1979, in his hometown, at the age of 37.
