Polish: variant of Kępa, from kępa ‘islet’. The same word is also applied to isolated clumps of trees and to tufts of grass; hence a topographic name for someone who lived on a small island or by an isolated clump of trees.
German: habitational name from any of several places so named, for example in Silesia (now Poland).
