    France sells Louisiana territories to U.S.A.

    1803 · The U.S doubles in size

    The United States purchased all the Louisiana territory (828,000 sq. mi) from France, only paying 15 million dollars (A quarter trillion today) for the land. In the purchase, the US obtained the land that makes up 15 US states and 2 Canadian Provinces. The United States originally wanted to purchase of New Orleans and the lands located on the coast around it, but quickly accepted the bargain that Napoleon Bonaparte offered.

    The Town of Italy was founded in 1815 from the Town of Naples while still part of Ontario County. When Yates county was established in 1823, the Town of Italy became part of the new county.

    English: from the Middle English and Old French personal name Bertelot, Bartelot (with the Old French double diminutive suffix -elot), a pet form of Bartholomew .

    History: This is the name of a well-established New England family. Its members include Josiah Bartlett (1729–95), who was born in Amesbury, MA, and became governor of NH (1790–94). A Richard Bartlet(t) settled in Newbury, MA, in 1635.
