When Johannes Alder was born on 5 June 1830, in Schwellbrunn, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, his father, Johann or Hans Jakob Alder, was 31 and his mother, Anna Maria Baumann, was 30. He married Johanna Meier on 20 October 1856, in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 7 October 1906, at the age of 76.
